Top 10 Verical Farming Innovations : Future of Farming

As the fruits and vegetables are very important for healthy diet and one should always include variety of plenty vegetables & fruits in daily diet.

Now technology is changing everyday. Results of this we are able to eat some fruits or vegetables throughout  the year which  are previously available only in particular season. Technology is a big part of our society & our future. Many new technologies invented to grow vegetables and fruits organically like hydroponics, vertical farming, aeroponics, aquaponics, verticrop etc. These new farming technologies taking place of traditional farming.

Below are the top 10 vertical farming innovations that could end up in your plate in the near future!

1.              1. Hydroponics - growing plants without soil

Hydroponics

In this the plants are grown without soil, bark or peat moss. In simple words it is a way to skip the soil, and grow crops directly in nutrient-rich water. Basically if you want to do hydroponics farming, basic needs for that are Fresh water, Oxygen, Root support, Nutrients and most important light.

What you Need:

Fresh water : Most plants like water with pH level around 6-6.5. You can adjust the acidity of  your water with solutions which are found in hydroponic store etc.

Oxygen: Normally in traditional farming which is done in soil, roots can get the oxygen needed from pockets of air in the soil. For that you have to leave space between the base of your plant and water reservoir in hydroponics system.

Root Support: In this plant’s root still need a little something to hold on to though it is without soil. Materials like vermiculite, perlite, coconut fiber, and rockwool can be used for root support.

Nutrients: Plants needs plenty of  nutrients of magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and other nutrients to stay healthy and productive. In traditional farming where plants grown in the ground for that purpose we use fertilizer. That nutrient solution can be available in stores and it is easy to buy mixtures online or you can make your own nutrient solutions.

Light: Each kind of plant will have a different requirement for the amount of light it needs and you might have to invest in some special lighting.

2.      2. Aeroponics - growing plants with no soil & very little water

Aeroponics

The word Aeroponic is derived from the Greek meanings of aer and ponos. This type o farming is different from hydroponics farming. Basic priniciple of aeroponics growing is to grow plants in a closed or semi-closed environment by spraying the plant’s roots and lower stem with an atomized or sprayed, nutrient-rich water solution.

3.      3. Aquaponics - An Ecosystem that promotes plants & fish farming together

Aquaponics term originitaed from the two words aquaculture means the growing of fish in a closed environment and hydroponics means the growing of plants usually in a soil-less environment.

4.      4. Lokal - serving fresh food right where it's grown

It means locally grown which refers to food and other agricultural products e.g wool or flowers that are grown or produced, processed and then sold fresh within a certain area where it’s grown

5.      5. Aerofarms - The smart vertical farming innovation

It is a bold mission to grow the best plants possible for the betterment of humanity.

6.      6. Plant scrapers - A building that provides food for it's occupants

8. Modular Farms - produce fresh plants virtually Anywhere in the world

9. Cubic Farming systems - the next- gen sustainable farming system

10. Zipgrow - vertical farming for the modern farmers

Verical farming is revolutionary & more sustainable method of agriculture. By use of this method we can lowers requirements of water to up to 70% & also there is saving of space and soil. This eco- friendly methods makes possibility of farming real in difficult environs.

. In this lockdown many people grown their vegetables on terrace garden by themselves. Also they haven't use any chemical fertilizer rather they have used various organic fertilizer like jivamrit, panchyagavya, beejamrit. Biofertilizers increase seed germination upto 20%. PSB is most widely used biofertilizer in India.

Suma Narendra who hails from Peringanad , Kerala she created personal farm on terrace which is filled with different varieties of vegetables, like cauliflower, beetroot, onion, ginger, cabbage, & even a set space for a herb garden. Suma started growing creepers & climbers on the fence & set up a 2 ring compost so that she could use all the biowaste in her kitchen for the plants! She utilized her terrace space & lockdown time to set up her personal farm & now enjoying her homegrown fruits and vegetables without any risk.

Another inspiring story is of Vijay Jardhari who is the founder of Beez Nacho Andolan ( Save Seeds ) ( BBA). He is against monoculture farming. Vijay led the movement called Dandi March across the state with his friends to collect indigenous seeds. Vijay collected 350 varieties of seeds! Vijay shared his knowledge on an ancient farming practice called 'Baranj'. (Bara  is 12 & Anaj means crop). In rain-fed Tehri-Garhwal regions this inter-cropping method of twelve or more crops is usually practised. This method was dying in the 80s. It provides food security to the farmer  & also raises soil ferlity. He got Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar in 2009 for his exceptional contribution to saving traditional seed varieties via BBA.

In this method crops are a mix of grains, masala, vegetables & pulses and there is no fixed pattern. Vijay said that it will be hard for a farmer to switch from monoculture & may even suffer crop damage in the beginning. But in the long run they will benefit.

Many people started growing fruits & vegetables on their terrace. Organic farming is becoming popular because people are becoming alert for their health & also for health of nature.

When you are starting Organic Farming?

A step towards Nature!!!!
