2 - Coconut leaf straws!!

Prof. Saji Varghese, Christ University, Banglore developed straws from coconut leaves and it is an eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws. The coconut leaves undergo a three-step cleaning process. The dry leaflets are cut out and then rolled to form narrow cylindrical bodies along the length using a water-resistant food grade adhesive.
The tube is then dipped in wax to retain the moisture and increase the shelf life. Food-grade adhesive is used as glue, making it free of chemicals. Straws are 4 to 8 inches in length and of 3-13 mm  in diameter. The straws have received almost 20 million orders and been creating impact. The straws have been able to prevent the buring of coconuts leaves, have played a part in reducing the usage of plastic straws and have empowered women in rural communities through employment.. Great. Wish him all success.

Before this eco-friendly bomboo rakhis was produced by Korku and Gond adhivasis at Lawada in the Melghat hilly tracts of Amaravati district in Maharashtra.

Sampoorna Bamboo Kendra, an organisation working in the field of bamboo product design development among the abroriginal tribes after five years of its experience in the area. Rakhi making can evoke interest in Adilabad and neighbouring districts as the Kolam artisans also make bamboo products.

There are about 50 designs of rakhis, which have the brand name "Shrushti bandh".
About 450 adivasis work for three months using simplest of tools and produce about 50,000 wrist bands and an equal number of kits which contain directions for those who are intrested in making the rakhis themselves. These bands are even being exported to USA and UK.

4. Biodegradable  Plates and Bowls

Plates and bowls made using leaf!! Vistaraku, Hyderabad makes bowls and plates from leaves of palash as well as siali, a large-leafed creeper that grows around sal trees. It is made in a circular shape, by stitching 6-8 plash leaves using food-grade cotton thread or with coconut strands. With a soft, velvety texture, these stitched leaves are soaked in water covered with cloth for a day. The leaves are then heat pressed with food-grade two-ply cardboard and craft sheet using tamarind paste. These biodegradable plates and bowls are made in different sizes ranging from 16 inch, 13 inch, 12 inch, and 11 inch dinner plates, 10 inch, 9 inch, 8 inch and 6-inch breakfast plates, and 6 inch, 4 inch and 3 inch dessert/soup bowls. While leaves have antiseptic and antibacterial properties, the cutlery is not only healthy but also sustainable. They are biodegradable and can be easily disposed of. They also make forks, spoons and knives using birchwood. Great. Join with me to congragulate Venugopal and Mdhavi Vippulancha and wish them all success.
