Turmeric is Herbal Medicine - This Golden Spice has many health benefits

    Turmeric which belongs to Curcuma longa of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, the roots of which are used in cooking is a flowering plant

The plant requires temperature between 20 & 30 degree. and a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive. Plants are gathered each year for their rhizomes. Some for propagation in the following season & some for consumption.

     The rhizomes are used fresh or boiled in water & dried, after which they are gound in to deep organge-yellow powder. It is also used in Ayurvedic medicine where it is also known as haridra.

Turmeric powder is aboout 60-70 % carbohydrates, 6-13% water, 6-8% ptotein, 5-10% fat, 3-7% dietery minerals, 3-7% essential oils, 2-7% dietery fiber, and 1-6% curcuminoids.

   Curcumin constitutes up to 3.14% of assayed commercial samples of turmeric powder. Some 34 essential oils are present in turmeric, among which turmerone germacrone,  and zingiberene are major constituent.

     Turmeric & curcumin (one of its constituents) have been studied in numerous clinical trilas for various human  diseases and conditions. Many high quality studies show that it has major benefits for your body and brain. Because turmeric contains many bioactive compounds with powerful medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. It has powerful anti-inflammetory effects and is a very strong anti-oxidant.

Curcumin which has powerful anti-oxidant effects neutralises free radicals on its own but also stimulates your body's own anti-oxidant enzymes. This curcumin have many health benefits like in heart diseases, cancer and in Alzheimer's disease.

A cup of haldi doodh can take you a long way in terms of achieving good health.

1] It can help to increase the recovery. It makes room for the body's repair work to work optimally.

2] It helps you to have a restful sleep.

3] Drink golden milk during every season change as to protect yourself from cough, cold and flu.

4] This golden milk can be helpful as a remedy for acne and unpredicatable periods.

5] You can add a pinch of nutmeg in golden milk for added benefits.

6] A pinch of black pepper in your haldi doodh can help in dealing with sore throat and infections.

Besides spice turmeric also have many benefits in beauty routine. 

High anti-oxidant level in turmeric slows down the cell damage, anti-inflammatory  property of turmeric make it work for acne, uneven skin tone and even on fine wrinkles.

Here we will see some easy turmeric face mask which you can prepare at home.

#1. Sandalwood and Turmeric, malai pack for dry skin

1. Mix gram flour (besan), sandalwood powder, cream (malai) & a pinch of turmeric (haldi) powder. Cream helps in adding back moisture to the skin.

2. Form a smooth paste by mixing all the ingredients.

3. Apply this pack to all over your face including your neck.

4. After 15 minutes rinse with warm water. 

#2 Honey & Turmeric face pack for dry skin

1. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder, 1 tablespoon of milk cream & 1 teaspoon of honey. 

2. Mix well to form a paste & apply this pack all over your face & neck.

3. Keep it on for 10-15 minutes & rinse with warm water. 

For oily skin

1. Mix 1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder, 1/2 tablespoon of milk, 1/2 tablespoon of raw honey. 

2. Make a paste . Follow same procedure as above.

Use these packs 2-3 times a week.

#3. Egg white & Turmeric face mask

1. Mix the egg white with a few drops of olive oil or almond oil. Add rose water, lemon juice and a pinch of turmeric to it. Eggs work as astringents & help relieve itchy & irritable skin.

2. Apply this paste to all dry areas of your body, especially the face, elbows & knees. Rose water contains anti-inflammatory properties that sooth irritated dry skin.

3. Allow the pack to dry completely & then rinse with warm water. 

Olive oil contains anti- oxidants, which is great for skin as it hydrates the skin.

Use this pack 3-4 times a week.

Precautions to take while using turmeric:-

1) Make a use of turmeric in little quantity. When applied to the skin, turmeric can temporarily stain the skin or leave a yellowish residue.

2) If you have a turmeric allergy then avoid direct skin contact as it can cause irritation, redness & swelling.
